"Computer science knowledge is evolving so rapidly that it has a half life of three years," says Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Dale Skrien. "Three years from now, half of what you know will be irrelevant. We try... to avoid teaching that half that's going to be irrelevant." For most upper-level computer science courses, that means teaching what Skrien calls "the foundational stuff." Sorting algorithms. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Applying that knowledge to extensive programming projects. "We want our students to learn general problem-solving skills, not how to get an Excel spreadsheet to do one of those things for you." Skrien, who worked for Digital Equipment Corporation on a sabbatical and during a leave of absence, uses that experience to give students insights into the wide world of the information technology industry.
